Tesla Powerwall vs Sigenergy SigenStor
An honest comparison from a licensed Sunshine Coast installer
Two products, two different approaches
Tesla Powerwall is the most recognised home battery on the market. It's AC-coupled, fixed at 13.5kWh per unit, and has a well-known brand behind it. If you drive a Tesla, the app integration is a genuine advantage.
Sigenergy SigenStor is modular, DC-coupled, and built for whole-home backup. Capacity can be sized from 5kWh to 54kWh. It's a newer product, but the specs are competitive and the support structure is there.
We install both. This page covers the differences so you can work out which one suits your situation.

Tesla Powerwall 3
Brand and track record
Powerwall has been around since 2015. It's installed in hundreds of thousands of homes worldwide. That track record matters when you're spending $16,000 or more on a home energy system.
Tesla's service network and software support are established. You're not buying into something unproven.
AC-coupled installation
Powerwall connects to your home via AC coupling. That makes it straightforward to add storage to an existing solar system without replacing your inverter. If your solar is running well and you just want to add a battery, this is worth considering.
The trade-off with AC coupling is efficiency. Power converts from DC (solar) to AC (inverter) then back into AC for battery charging. Each step loses a small amount of energy. Tesla's roundtrip efficiency sits at around 90%.
Tesla app and EV integration
If you drive a Tesla vehicle, the native integration is a real advantage. You manage your car and home battery from the one app. You can schedule solar charging, set departure times, and monitor everything from a single dashboard.
For non-Tesla EV owners, this advantage doesn't apply. A Hyundai or BYD driver gets nothing extra from the Tesla ecosystem.
Fixed capacity
Each Powerwall unit is 13.5kWh. Most homes can install one or two. If 13.5kWh suits your usage, that's fine. If your household uses more or you're planning to add an EV, the fixed unit size limits your options.
Sigenergy SigenStor
Modular capacity
SigenStor scales from 5kWh to 54kWh in 9kWh modules. You can start with what fits your budget and current usage, then add capacity later. If you buy an EV or your household energy use increases, the system can grow with it.
DC coupling
SigenStor is DC-coupled, meaning solar power goes directly into the battery before it reaches the inverter. Fewer conversion steps means less energy lost. Roundtrip efficiency is above 95%, compared to around 90% for AC-coupled systems.
DC coupling works best when SigenStor is installed alongside a new solar system or as part of a full inverter replacement. Retrofitting onto an existing setup is possible but needs assessment.
Whole-home backup
SigenStor supports whole-home backup via a transfer switch. Grid switchover is under 5ms, which is fast enough that most equipment keeps running without interruption. Air conditioning, fridges, and computers typically don't notice the gap.
DC EV charging
SigenStor includes a DC EV charging output. That means your EV can charge directly from the battery at higher speeds than standard AC home charging. It works with most non-Tesla EVs. If you drive a Hyundai Ioniq, BYD, or similar, this is worth knowing about.
A newer product
SigenStor hasn't been in the market as long as Powerwall. That's worth acknowledging. Flux has been installing and supporting the system and we're satisfied with the product quality and manufacturer support, but the long-term field data isn't as extensive as Tesla's yet.
